Newport to be transformed into 17th-century Venice

Going Out

GLORIOUS SOUND Choral ensemble Resurgam will be joined by the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble and Cór Mhaigh Eo for ‘Venetian Splendour’.

Acclaimed professional choral ensemble Resurgam will bring the glories of 17th-century Europe to the divine surroundings of St Patrick’s Church, Newport, on Saturday night, February 15.
Resurgam teams up with the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, and special guest ensemble Cór Mhaigh Eo, in presenting ‘Venetian Splendour’, a celebration of Monteverdi’s masterwork ‘Selva Morale e Spirituale’.
The unique tones of period brass coupled with dazzling vocals will fill the church with glorious sound, and transport listeners to 17th-century Venice, famed for its music, art and architecture.
Resurgam’s hallmarks as a choir are clarity and transparency of sound, attention to text and emotive content, virtuosity in improvisation and ornamentation, colourful interplay of instrumental and vocal resources and textures, and imaginative and engaging programming.
The singers, many of whom have parallel careers as soloists, have all performed often with period ensembles and are able to match the flexibility and articulation of such instruments and work with them interchangeably.
The ensemble’s artistic director, Mark Duley, is one of Ireland’s best-known choral specialists. He has led workshops and masterclasses for choirs and conductors in Ireland, the UK and continental Europe.
Resurgam’s recent collaborations with the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble have brought exciting new perspectives to the choir’s work in the field of early vocal music in Ireland.
Described as ‘one of the most accomplished choirs on this island’ by The Irish Times, the ensemble is committed to bringing fine choral music to the west of Ireland, and especially to places where hitherto there have few if any performances by professional choral ensembles. It also values its relationships with local choirs in the west, and enjoys sharing the expertise of its singers and players through workshops and coaching sessions.
