A MAN in his 30s appeared before a sitting of a Galway court yesterday where he was charged in connection with the seizure of approximately €85,500 worth of suspected cocaine in Ballinrobe.
The discovery of a large quantity of the class A drugs was the latest in a long line of detections by the Mayo Divisional Drugs Unit since they were set up in late 2019.
Gardaí attached to the Mayo Divisional Drugs Unit made the detection at approximately 1pm on Sunday, February 14, when a man was observed retrieving suspected cocaine at a rural location in Ballinrobe. Approximately €80,000 of suspected cocaine was seized at this location and one man in his early 30s was arrested.
During a follow up search of an address in Ballinrobe, Gardaí located a further €5,500 of suspected cocaine, €1,400 in suspected cannabis herb, a suspected cocaine press, moulds and a small quantity of cash.
The man who was arrested was detained at Castlebar Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. He was remanded in custody over night before he was charged with possession of the drug for sale and supply and brought before a sitting of Galway District Court.
Earlier this month, the Mayo Divisional Drugs Unit seized €70,000 worth of cocaine and three people were arrested following an incident in Balla and at the end of January gardaí seized over €12,000 worth of cocaine and cash in two operation carried out on Friday in Kiltimagh and Claremorris.
These discoveries followed the discovery of €125,000 worth of drugs at the start of January and it has been a good start to 2021 for the drugs unit.
The Mayo Divisional Drugs Unit, headed by Detective Superintendent Joe McKenna, was launched on December 20, 2019 and last year over €1 million worth of drugs was seized by An Garda Siochána in Mayo, more than double the value seized compared to the previous year.
