Obituaries

Cleggernagh, Rathconrath, Mullingar, Co Westmeath and late of Owenwee, Westport, Co Mayo

The death took place of Annie Kelly (née Joyce) on January 10, 2021, at the home of her niece Mary Galvin, Aittireesh, Westport, after a short illness. Annie was born in 1933 to the late Peter and Katie Joyce of Owenwee, Westport. She was predeceased by her husband Kevin, brothers James and John Joe who died in childhood and later her brothers Frank and Martin, also her sisters Mary Kerrigan, Nora Joyce and Catherine Gallagher. Annie emigrated to America in 1953 and it was there that she met Kevin Kelly, they married in New York in 1962 and returned to Ireland soon afterwards, setting up home in Co Westmeath. They worked together on their farm until Kevin’s death in 1987. Annie enjoyed going to bingo and playing 25 card games, which continued up until Covid-19 restrictions. She was very fortunate to be surrounded by great friends and neighbors in Westmeath who supported her constantly. Annie enjoyed regular visits to her native Mayo to visit family as well as regular trips and pilgrimages to Knock Shrine. She was deeply religious and prayed the rosary daily and attended Mass as often as possible. Annie’s removal was from Mary’s home to St Mary’s Church, Westport for her funeral Mass celebrated by Fr Shane Costello. She then made her final journey back to Co Westmeath for funeral Mass in her local parish church in Milltown, celebrated by Fr Willie Fitzsimons after which she was laid to rest with her husband Kevin in the adjoining cemetery. Annie will be sadly missed by her brothers Paddy (Reading, England) and Peter (Clinton, USA), her sister-in-law Pat Joyce, her many nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbors and a wide circle of friends.
May her gentle soul rest in peace.
