Fallduff, Louisburgh
The death took place on Monday, January 18, 2021 in University Hospital Galway of Jimmy Duffy, Fallduff, Louisburgh, a well-known and valued member of the local community.
Aged 85 years, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary Duffy of Fallduff and was pre-deceased by his sister Maureen (RIP) and his sister-in-law Joan (RIP). After he left school, Jimmy moved initially to Dublin and then to England where he spent many years working as a labourer especially in the South West region of Devon. Jimmy was a hard worker all his life and never a man to sit still for too long. He returned to Ireland in the 1970’s and built a house near his brother Tommy. He worked for the Forestry for many years and then at the newly opened Delphi Adventure Centre. Jimmy lived a very active and full life and loved nothing better than setting off for a journey in his green van. He could be found in Cork, Donegal or anywhere in-between, and travelled every by-road and high road on the Western seaboard right up to 2020 and the onset of ‘lockdowns’. Jimmy made friends easily wherever he went and was a great man for a story. He had many tales to tell of his times in England and his various adventures on the road. His journeys didn’t stop in Ireland and he had been to many countries in Europe, to Australia, South America and Asia. He had a great interest in the world around him, people and places – although he may not always have been able to put a name to a face and would need an occasional prompting.
Having grown up near Old Head, Jimmy loved the sea and no day was complete without a couple of trips to Old Head Pier, where he would catch up with friends old and new. He had a little boat and from June to September would be out on Clew Bay or the Killary fishing for mackerel.
Jimmy will be sadly missed by his brother Tommy, nieces Mary and Siobhán and nephew Con, other relatives, neighbours and his many friends all over Ireland and beyond.
A special mention to the people who looked after Jimmy when he was in need in recent months, to his wonderful neighbours and friends who made sure his days were never too long and helped with the chores he could no longer do. To his GP, Dr Karina Morrison and the wonderful staff in Louisburgh Health Centre, Áine and Michelle the District Health nurses, members of Louisburgh Order of Malta, Stauntons Pharmacy and a very special thanks to his home help team, Breege, Catherine and Deborah.
Jimmy’s removal was from Sweeney’s Funeral Home to St Patrick’s Church, Louisburgh where Fr Mattie Long, PP, officiated at the funeral ceremony. Music at the Mass was provided by Catherine McLeod. Jimmy was laid to rest in Kilgeever Cemetery.
